Founded as an off-shoot of hosting the 1984 Midwest Tandem Rally, the Chicago
Area Tandems (later changed to Chicago Area Tandem Society) has become more than
just a means of riding with fellow tandemists. It has developed many
relationships, including friendly rivalries with other tandem clubs around the
nation. Many clubs adopted the animal name and carried on the fun.
From our beginnings of simply having monthly rides, we have expanded to
occasional overnight rides in different states as well as attending the annual
Midwest Tandem Rally (MTR) each year as a group. Basically we remain a friendly
group of folks who enjoy riding together and promote the healthy and social
sport of tandem bicycling.
Any tandemist will tell you that riding a tandem is great fun, and a good
deal more social than riding a single. What you might not know is how much more
fun it is to ride with other tandemists. It's hard to beat the exhilaration of
riding in a pack of a dozen or more cruising tandems.
Tandemists naturally band together, because tandemists are, by nature, a
little different than the average single bike rider---we have tandems. And we
love 'em! You can't be an anti-social tandemist! Our membership is made up of
teams from all over the Chicagoland area, we even have some members in other
states. Member's ages range from 3 years old to 86 years young. We have teams
that ride 100-mile rides every weekend, and teams that barely get a 100 miles in
during the year. There are speed demon teams and there are teams that amble
along at very comfortable paces. Whatever your style or pace, you'll fit in.
Most weekend rides start at 9 a.m. and are between 25 and 65 miles in length.
Often, for some reason, food is a factor on rides, either in riding to a
restaurant and back, or riding out and back to a restaurant. As always, the goal
on any of our rides is to have fun, and enjoy each other's company.
We publish an on line newsletter CATS
Tales listing upcoming club rides, regional and national tandem events, news
items ride reports, equipment reviews, a for-sale listing for club members,
laughs and advice.
We are affiliated with many national and local advocacy groups, such as the League
of American Bicyclists, the League of Illinois
Bicyclists, the Active Transportation
Alliance, and the Tandem Club of America,.
CATS is organized to maximize the fun and minimize the effort to make it
happen. Volunteerism makes it all work. All members ride entirely at their own
risk. Members encourage everyone to wear helmets, obey the rules of the road,
and to ride safely at all times.
Our only meeting is our February planning session to determine the year's
No matter what style of riding you like, no matter what type or age of tandem
you have;(or even if you don't have one yet); no matter your age or condition;
you'll find you're welcome in CATS as long as you like tandems.
